Miniature Earth 2.0
July 7th, 2009
We’re finally putting together many ideas for the new Miniature Earth. It will become a resource and a place for people to share opinions and participate on social actions around the globe. We are also planning a shop where you will be able to buy products that will revert money for specific actions that you find on the Project, for example: clean water, education, HIV/AIDS, etc…
We are very excited to see the new release, which we expect to launch still this year, so stay tuned!
New Version Soon!
March 4th, 2009
A completely reviewed version with lot of new features is coming soon. We will provide the resources for each statistic you see on the video, give you the option to get a wider view, a deeper view and your point of view. Plus, we want to be more proactive by helping people to understand the world’s situation today, any suggestion?
We don’t have a NGO status e don’t aim to become one, there are many serious NGO’s out there doing a great job. Our goal is to use data in a easy way and make things easier for those who want to help somehow.
Please, feel free to send us comments and suggestions!

A Happier Christmas
December 16th, 2008
The Miniature Earth have donated $250 for a local organization that bought gifts for poor children in the Curitiba city area in Brazil, if you want to check out some images from the event, please go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAhvYYNxuxg
The reality of these children is really hard, we are very happy to give them some hapiness, even though we know this is temporary. Thanks for all of you who download the movie and contribute with $5, this is your money and we hope to keep doing things like this in the future.
Best wishes for you all and happy holiday season!
The Educated, Working Woman… in Nepal
October 18th, 2008
I am an educated, working woman. To an American, this is not uncommon to hear. But still today in some countries, women do not have the opportunity to work or be educated. Many countries are rapidly growing in manufacturing and technology, helping their economies grow. India and China are two of these Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs). And located right in between India and China, along the Himalayas, is Nepal, living a very different situation than its two border countries.
Nepal is currently ranked 199th among 210 national economies. The main religion of Nepal is Hinduism, about 80% of the population. Until 1990, Nepal was an absolute monarchy under control of the King. In the 1990’s and early 2000’s, there were different political reforms. Finally in December 2007 Interim Parliament passed a bill and declared Nepal to be a Federal Democratic Republic. In August 2008, the first Prime Minister of Nepal was elected since the country’s transition from a monarchy to a republic. These major changes are taking place now!! So how is it affecting its citizens?
Well, because of religious and cultural practices, many people are still discriminated against because of the rigid caste system. Preference is given to men, and under the law, women are not equal to men, and they are economically and socially dependent on their fathers and husbands. The Dalit (lowest caste, also known as untouchables) women are the most disadvantaged of the world’s poor. 2.5 million women are at the bottom of the hierarchy of class, caste, and gender. But hopefully that too will change soon. Actually, we can see that a change has already taken place.
Empower Dalit Women of Nepal (EDWON.ORG) works to improve the lives of Dalit women in rural Nepal by enabling them to fight for their human rights and raise their standard of living. EDWON is the American sister organization of the Association for Dalit Women’s Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN), a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) in Nepal. Through this program, women spend 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, for 6 months learning the basics of reading, writing, and math. Because education is the key to success and empowerment, the women begin to see how they can act for a social change.
They start and run their own village savings group, and through it they all contribute monthly, and loans are taken out to buy livestock, seeds, or inventory for a tea stall. The women start their own businesses together, and apply the business skills that they have learned. At first, men were hostile to the idea of women’s groups, but most have come to understand the benefits for the economy and the community. To learn more about this program and the women making it happen, visit www.edwon.org
These groups are still functioning and growing today. I am happy to see that Nepal is improving in these ways. I feel very lucky to be living in America, where I can go to school and get an education, and go to work and earn a living. It is so strange to think that the United States of America is such a young country, by looking at how far we have come socially and economically. It didn’t have a very good human rights beginning, and only in the 1950’s and 60’s did the Civil Rights Movement change they way different races and genders were treated, but look how far we’ve come! I can only hope the same for countries like Nepal.
Big Plans For Miniature Earth
July 31st, 2008
There are many versions of the Miniature Earth video on Youtube and its linked to over 83,000 blogs now. This has produced over 2million visits to the website in the last 12months.
As you may expect we also get a lot of feedback and we know that the video is a reality check that makes people stop and think how lucky they are. Many people also say that feel motivated to make a difference and do something. That’s actually easier said than done. So, we are in the process of planning to make doing something a lot easier.
Miniature-earth will soon become a Social Enterprise to accept donations, and to sell branded products. Donations and profits will be used to fund the work of NGO´s that are fighting poverty in the Least Developed Nations (defined by the United Nations), and also in Brazil´s poor communities as the project was born there.
To develop the business I decided to partner with Miniature Earth´s founder, Alysson Lucca. I am a 42year old English guy with a background in marketing, and ran a brand strategy focused marketing agency in London before re-designing my life to develop ethical brands of my own, of which there is more information on my personal blog www.paulbarnett.wordpress.com.
“Like many people I was moved when I saw the video. Then I checked the website and blog which prompted me to make contact with Allyson. I heard the remarkable story of Miniature Earth and immediately realised this project has the potential to be a powerful brand and a great social enterprise, and I knew I could help make it happen. I have worked with many brands, but few as exciting as this one - a band that has the power to change the world that we live in for the better, especially for those that most need change!”
At this time we are getting all the ideas into the business plan, whilst also developing product ideas. We will sell through an online shop, and also to supply our brand wholesale to retailers. Additionally we intend to licence use of the brand to appropriate retailers who want to develop unique collections. Enquiries from retailers are welcome and should be sent to paul@miniature-earth.com
You can keep up to date with news on the blog, or join our newsletter mailing list. Just send an email with the word newsletter in the email title.
Limited Edition T-Shirts
April 28th, 2008
After months going after this idea, The Miniature Earth t-shirts are ready and finally available. This is the first time we go to the “real world” and we did that working with local communities down here in Brazil. The people behind it don’t belong to any big industry, but I can assure the quality and love that everyone involved have put into these t-shirts.
Check for photos and different models here:

Help wanted!
April 8th, 2008
I started this Blog in February, 10 - in two days we’re going to complete 2 months online and I already realized that I’m going to need some help, as you probably noticed my English is not good for writing a blog, and even if I try to post at least once a day its really difficult to be always up do date.
So please, if you are a person who care about social issues, know the latest on this subject and want to be part of this Blog, send an email to m.moraes@miniature-earth.com
The Miniature Earth blog is visited 30/40 times a day and its not a commercial website, so we’re not going to pay you for this. We want to increase the readers numbers of course so if you want to help, please get it touch!
Spread the word, by wearing it!
April 7th, 2008
Thanks for all those who have been donating for the Miniature Earth, I’m glad to let you know that we’re making t-shirts with sentences from the webvideo. All t-shirts are being sewing by a local group of people (will post some pictures later). I thought it was a good way to use the money from donations as we’re helping this group to work and probably envisioning the local economic growth.
There will be 4 different t-shirts:
Brown color, stamp in red: 8 north americans
Red color, stamp in white: 9 are disable
Creme color, stamp in blue: 14 Can’t read
Creme color, stamp in light green: The Miniature Earth logo
I still dont have the final price, will let you know as soon as possible. Will post some photos as well. Sizes will be L, M, P.
$20,000 salary vs $200 salary a year…
April 4th, 2008
So, is fair trade good for the US or not? Despite some companies that see it as a problem this article from the Observer online, give us a good perspective about this subject.
“…In the United States, the poverty line is an annual salary of around $20,000 a year or less. In the rest of the world the impoverished are lucky to make $200 a year…”
